Yakima water tanks are ‘not suitable’ for new house

Yakima, Washington (Reuters) – Yakima’s water tanks aren’t suitable for a new home, a water system operator said, as thousands of people have been left without access to clean water for days.

A coalition of water and sanitation groups said on Monday that the city had missed the deadline to install water tankers on its water distribution system by a week, with the water tank system in particular struggling.

The coalition said it expected about 4,500 homes in the city to be without access by the end of the month.

The Yakima Water Supply Authority said it was “working on” installing the tankers but had not been able to say how many of the water tanks were in place.

The water supply system, located in the rural town of Lake Sammamish, provides water to about 10,000 people in the state.

The group has urged city officials to expedite the installation of the tankering system.
